The Art of The Argument
This week we're asking the question every married couple is trying to answer - how can we communicate without causing conflict?
The heart of this episode is about recognizing the differences in how couples communicate and not letting that become a constant stumbling block to finding common ground.
Using the wisdom gained from over 38 years of marriage, Steve and Mary tackled some of the most common (and frustrating) issues in marriage, including:
- Different communication styles in marriage (one wants to talk now, the other needs some space)
- Why “tone vs. content” can start a fight (it’s not what you said, it’s how you said it… sound familiar?)
- The battle between letting things pile up vs. addressing issues in real time
What Steve and Mary Shared:
- Healthy Arguments Are Normal: Don’t be afraid of a little friction. As long as you’re respectful, a good argument acts as a release valve—you might need it!
- Listen to Understand: Instead of just trying to win, try asking: “Help me understand what you’re feeling.” That simple shift can save you a fortune on counseling.
- Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Saying “I’m sorry” isn’t enough—put your apology into action. When values are honored and you show respect, it makes a real difference.
- Lean Into Each Other’s Strengths: Celebrate the differences! Gratitude for what your spouse brings to the table is like emotional oxygen for your relationship.
The idea is we're creating an environment of safety, that it's okay to express yourself, even if I don't agree with you." - Steve Alessi
This episode already got the seal of approval from Mary's mom, Dr. Faith (which is a big compliment) so we know it will bless both married couples and those who are preparing for marriage!
